Defence Gardens Scheme (DGS) Open Day 5 September 2024 at the Walled Garden, Linburn, Edinburgh

Defence Gardens Scheme (DGS) launched its Autumn 2024 programme, at Linburn Walled Garden, Edinburgh on Thursday 5th September.

The Open Day attracted over 25 visitors and brought together veterans, their families, and representatives from various veteran organisations to explore the benefits of horticultural therapy. It was an opportunity for participants to engage in gardening activities, learn about the therapeutic benefits of plants, and connect with one another in a supportive environment. The day featured guided tours of the garden, where attendees learned about plants and their uses in therapeutic practices. The garden itself, filled with vibrant flowers, herbs, and vegetables, served as a backdrop for the day's activities.

Richard Henderson (Live Life Scotland, Programme Manager) and Charlie Marno (DGS Coordinator for Scotland and Northern Ireland) opened the day with a warm welcome. Then the DGS delivery team (Laura & Helen) explained the importance of connecting with nature as a means of promoting mental health and well-being among veterans. Helen, the DGS horticultural therapist, explained how engaging with plants can reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, offering veterans a natural way to cope with their experiences. A veteran who had previously participated in horticultural therapy shared his testimonial during the event. His story highlighted the transformative power of gardening in their lives, emphasising improved mental well-being, social connections, and a sense of purpose.

Practical workshops during the day included “Gardening for Mindfulness,” where participants engaged in hands-on activities such as planting seeds and potting plants. This workshop was very popular and highlighted how gardening can serve as a form of mindfulness practice, allowing individuals to focus on the present moment and find peace in the act of nurturing life.

In addition to the workshops and presentations, the open day provided ample opportunities for networking. Representatives from various veteran organisations were able to connect with each other and share contact information which fostered a sense of community among attendees.

Following a lovely lunch of sandwiches and wraps along with plenty of tea and coffee the attendees left with newfound knowledge and inspiration, it was evident that the open day had planted the seeds for a brighter, more connected future for the veteran community.

In summary the Defence Gardens Horticultural Therapeutic Open Day at Linburn was a resounding success, bringing together veterans and their families in a nurturing environment. The event not only exhibited the therapeutic benefits of gardening but also created a supportive network for veterans seeking healing and connection.
